Barren Island is the only confirmed active volcano in South Asia — and one of the most remote, spectacular natural wonders in the Indian Ocean. Rising dramatically out of the Andaman Sea some 135 km northeast of Port Blair and about 85 km from Havelock, the island is entirely uninhabited and protected. Its volcanic crater emits a near-continuous plume of smoke and steam, and lava flows have periodically reached the sea. Reaching it is an expedition in every sense of the word — and the marine life in its surrounding waters is extraordinary precisely because it is so rarely visited.
